Enclosure to Despatch No. 124 of the 1st May, 1909.

Sir,

Supreme Court, Hongkong, April 25th, 1909.

(1).

I have the honour to recommend that Your Excellency would be good enough to move the Secretary of State to procure the nomination of Mr. Ernest Hamilton Sharp, Barrister-at-Law for the rank of King's Counsel in this Colony.

(2).

Mr. Sharp was called to the English Bar in April, 1891, having previously taken his M.A. and B.C.L. degrees at Oxford.

(3).

He practised for three years in Gloucester, and on the Midland Circuit, and was admitted to the local Bar here in 1894.

(4).

I am satisfied that his position and reputation at the Hongkong Bar, as well as his character and attainments, are such as to justify his nomination as a K.C. here.

(5).

I should add that, owing to the death of Mr. Francis, K.C. last year, my own promotion to the Chief Justiceship, and the appointment of Mr. H.E. Pollock, K.C. to the Attorney Generalship of Fiji, there is, at present, no King's Counsel in the Colony.

(6).

I understand from Mr. Sharp that Sir John Carrington, the late Chief Justice, stated to him that he would support an application of this kind.

I have etc., (sgd.) W. Meigh Goodman, Chief Justice.

His Excellency Major-General Sir H.J. Gascoigne, K.C.M.G., The Officer Administering the Government

"LAD" is also not clear in its relevance and was not included as it seems out of place. The year "1902" was corrected to "1909" to match the context of the despatch date.
